Too many spelling errors

If I go to Tools|Options|Spelling and Grammar, and try to
uncheck "Hide spelling errors in this document" I get the
error

"There are too many spelling or grammatical errors to
continue displaying them. To check the spelling and
grammar of this document, choose Spelling and Grammar from
the Tools menu."

The problem is that I have a lot of computer programming
source code in the document and the spell checker is
verifying the spelling of words in the code. I think
that's what has caused the spell checker to exceed its
word limit. If I go to the Tools menu and choose Spelling
and Grammar it does go through word by word and underline
spelling errors but it examines all of the computer code
too. This word-by-word correction takes a long time.

Is there a way that I can increase the number of allowable
spelling and grammar errors so that Word can highlight
spelling errors as I create them? (I have Word 2002.)

Have you considered marking the offending text as "No Proofing"? If your
programming code is formatted in some paragraph style of its own (which
might be a good idea for a number of independent reasons anyway), you
could add this setting to the definition of the style.

I have noticed that my index entries are considered spelling errors, and
therefore I get the same "Too many spelling errors..." message too. Tmy index
entries are hidden text (of course) of the format {XE "main entry:secondary
entry" }. The fact that there is no space between the color character and
either of the words is causing the spelling error, I guess. Do people put a
space in their index entries in order to avoid this problem? I have a long
document and seem to be coming up to some limits in Word (see my other post
under "Spell checker is limmiting" (sic).

You might try telling Word that the source code isn't English.

To do this, select a patch of source code and use
Tools >> Language >> Set language >> No proofing

Unfortunately, this characteristic of text isn't settable using the Format
Painter. However, you can use the F4 function key to repeat the "Set
language" command for scattered patches of source code in a document. Even
better, you can have a "style" for source code that includes the "No
proofing" characteristic.
